If the amount of air in the pipe reaches more than 40% of its volume, the siphonic action will stop. To minimize the air entering the system, a baffle plate is usually fitted over the orifice of the outlet. This not only reduces the amount of air pulled into the outlet opening but also prevents the formation of vortices that would otherwise draw air into the system rapidly. The best outlets have been tested and approved by the British Board of Agrément. Outlets should also be designed to easily accommodate the waterproof membrane of the roof, which comes in many forms. Water flow accelerates in the stand pipe and drives the suction action of the hanging pipe.
