Erdolestane is a synthetic derivative of the -N-thio-lactone form of the natural amino acid, methionine. It is a novel mucolytic agent that significantly reduces the viscosity of sputum; significantly decreases the level of fucose (a marker of mucus glycoproteins) and the dry weight of macromolecules in sputum; significantly reduces DNA in sputum; and increases the transport of mucus cilia to enhance expectorant action. It also inhibits the production of free radicals due to smoking. It is mainly used clinically in acute and chronic bronchitis, sinusitis, otitis, pharyngitis and colds that cause respiratory obstruction and mucus thickening. Erdostein was developed by Refarmed and EdmondPharma in Italy and was approved for marketing in Italy in 1993 and is now available in France (1995) and Switzerland in the form of capsules, powders, syrups, aerosols and suppositories.
