Phthalic anhydride, abbreviated as phthalic anhydride, is a cyclic acid anhydride formed by dehydration of phthalic acid molecules. Phthalic anhydride, a white solid, is an important raw material in the chemical industry, especially for the manufacture of plasticizers. Phthalic anhydride can be used instead of phthalic acid, mainly reacting with mono alcohols to form esters, such as dibutyl phthalate, dioctyl phthalate.
