Carbon steel is an iron-carbon alloy with a carbon content of 0.0218% to 2.11%. Also called carbon steel. Generally also contains a small amount of silicon, manganese, sulfur, phosphorus. the higher the carbon content in carbon steel, the greater the hardness and the higher the strength, but the lower the plasticity.

According to the application, it can be divided into three categories: carbon structural steel, carbon tool steel and free-cutting structural steel.Carbon structural steel is further divided into engineering construction steel and machine manufacturing structural steel.
 

According to the processing technology, it can be divided into hot-rolled carbon steel and cold-rolled carbon steel.

1. Low carbon steel (C≤0.25%), also known as soft steel, low carbon steel is easy to accept various processing such as forging, welding and cutting. Commonly used in the manufacture of chains, rivets, bolts, shafts, etc.

2. Medium carbon steel (0.25%<C≤0.6%), including killed steel, semi-killed steel, boiling steel and other products. According to the quality, it can be divided into ordinary carbon structural steel and high-quality carbon structural steel. The thermal processing and cutting performance of medium carbon steel is good, but the welding performance is poor. Strength and hardness are higher than low carbon steel, while plasticity and toughness are lower than low carbon steel.

3. High-carbon steel (C>0.6%) is often used as tool steel, with a carbon content greater than 0.60 to 1.70%, which can be quenched and tempered. The higher the carbon content, the greater the hardness and strength, but the lower the plasticity. (Also, iron-carbon alloys with a carbon content of 2.1% to 4.5% are generally called cast iron.)

Hot rolled steel is steel that has been roll-pressed at very high temperatures-over 1,700, which is above the re-crystallization temperature for most steels. This makes the steel easier to form, and resulting in products that are easier to work with. To process hot rolled steel, manufacturers first start with a large, rectangular length of metal, called a billet. The billet is heated and then sent for pre-processing, where it is flattened into a large roll. From there, it is kept at a high temperature and run through a series of rollers to achieve its finished dimensions. Steel shrinks slightly as it cools. Since hot rolled steel is cooled after processing, there is less control over its final shape, making it less suitable for precision applications. Hot rolled steel is often used in applications where minutely specific dimensions aren't crucial. 

Cold rolled steel is essentially hot rolled steel that has been through further processing. Once hot rolled steel has cooled, it is then re-rolled at room temperature to achieve more exact dimensions and better surface qualities.
