Tarry Lapsang Souchong, also known as China Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong, referred to a smoked  black tea (Camellia sinensis) that is originally from the Wuyi Shan region in Fujian, China. It is distinct from other types of tea, as the leaves are traditionally smoke-dried over pinewood fires, imparting a distinctive exotic thick tarry smoky pine wood flavor. 

An ancient and much loved tea from China, large leaves are dried over smoky pine fires. As you might imagine, the tea develops a distinctive smoky flavor. Give it a try when you want a change of pace.

Lapsang Souchong refers to the larger, coarser tea leaves that are found lower on the branch. It is a member of the Bohea family teas, but is not an Oolong tea, as most Bohea teas are.

Lapsang souchong from the original source is increasingly expensive because of increasing demand for this variety of tea, as Wuyi is a small area with limited tea quantity.
