Description
Banaba extract is used as a natural health supplement and is made from the leaves of the banaba tree. Some research suggests that banaba extract may support blood sugar balance and weight loss. The primary active ingredient is corosolic acid, and there are also numerous possible synergists including lager-stroemin, flosin B and reginin A.
Banaba is a medicinal plant that grows in India, Southeast Asia and the Philippines. Traditional uses include brewing tea from the leaves as a treatment for diabetes and hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar). The hypoglycemic (blood sugar lowering) effect of banaba leaf extract is similar to that which induces glucose transport from the blood into body cells.
Corosolic acid is a pentacyclic triterpene acid found in Lagerstroemia speciosa. It is similar in structure to ursolic acid, differing only in the fact that it has a 2-alpha-hydroxy attachment.
Banaba bushes are woody plants with sturdy, mottled bark that sheds in patches throughout the year. The leaves are simple in form, and range from 3 to 10 inches long. The full, bushy plants can grow to exceed 400 feet tall, although most are small to medium in height. Specimens in cooler locations produce beautiful red and bronze foliage in the fall.
