The lightning arrester is an appliance used to protect electrical equipment from high transient overvoltages and to limit the duration and often the magnitude of the renewed current.
Note 1: Surge arresters are usually connected between the grid conductor and ground, however, they are sometimes connected next to the appliance windings or between the conductors.
Note 2: Lightning arrester is sometimes called overvoltage protector, overvoltage limiter (surge divider).

Scope of application
AC gapless metal oxide surge arresters are used to protect the insulation of AC power transmission and transformation equipment from lightning overvoltage and operational overvoltage damage.
