Propylene glycol is scientifically named "1,2-propylene glycol", its chemical formula is C3H8O2 , and its molecular weight is 76.10. There is a chiral carbon atom in the molecule. The racemate is a hygroscopic viscous liquid, almost odorless, flammable, low toxicity, and slightly spicy. Its relative density is 1.0362 (25/4 °C), its melting point is -60 °C, and its boiling point is 188.2 °C. It is miscible with water, acetone, ethyl acetate and chloroform, and soluble in ether. Although it has little solubility for hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and oils, it has stronger solubility than ethylene glycol. It is soluble in many essential oils, but not miscible with petroleum ether and paraffin oil. It is relatively stable to heat and light, and more stable at low temperatures. The boiling point of its L-isomer is 187 to 189°C, and the specific rotation [α] is D20-15.0°. It can be oxidized into propionaldehyde, lactic acid, pyruvic acid and acetic acid at high temperature.
