When certain materials are placed in the wastewater flow, removal efficiencies of oil increase due to impingement on their surface. Plastic media is particularly effective because of its oleophilic (oil attracting) characteristics. As fine oil droplets impinge upon or pass close to the plastic surface, they are attracted to it and adhere. Additional droplets continue to be attracted and coalesce or merge with previous droplets to produce much larger droplets. At a point, the droplets are large enough to break free and rise rapidly to the surface where they are skimmed or decanted. This coalescing action allows removal of smaller droplets than is possible with a straight gravity separator.

Oil/water separators are commonly used to separate oils from a variety of waste water discharges, as in industrial waste streams and storm water discharges. A properly designed, installed and operated oil/water separator system prevents the entry of unacceptable levels of oil contamination to a storm sewer or sanitary sewer system.

Installation details:
Coalescing tubes installed in easily removed baskets bolted down gasketed
Bolted down gasketed hatches on removable lid allow inspection of critical parts and adjustment of oil weir without removing the complete lid
Rotating pipe skimmer allows skimming level to be adjusted
Drain ports on both sides of vessel give access to removal of accumulated sludge
Designed for a linear flow rate of approximately 1 ft./minute
Designed to accommodate approximately ½ cubic foot of coalescing media per gpm of incoming flow

After wastewater passes through filters to separate out the largest solids, it is funneled into the oil water separator to undergo treatment. In most cases, the wastewater travels across a series of plates, generally on an incline.
These plates help to separate oil, water, and sludge into three distinct spaces. The heavy sludge and suspended solids drop to the bottom. Because oil particulates can be very small, however, the plates perform a special function.
As wastewater passes over the plates, oil particulates are tumbled over the surface, allowing them to collect and form larger globules, increasing buoyancy. This, in turn, helps more of the oil to separate and rise to the top of the water.
The stacked plates increase the surface area wastewater must pass over, and the fact that they're situated on an incline helps to force the oil up to surfaces where it can coalesce and form larger particles. The oil water separator ensures that the vast majority of oil and sludge is removed before wastewater goes on to finer filtration processes.
