Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) is a cellulose ether variety that has rapidly increased in production and dosage in recent years. They are non ionic cellulose mixed ethers made from refined cotton after alkalization treatment, using epoxy propane and chloromethane as etherification agents, through a series of reactions. Their degree of substitution is generally 1.2-2.0. Their properties are influenced by the content of methoxy and hydroxypropyl groups. It is a odorless, odorless, and non-toxic white powder. They have the characteristics of thickening capacity, PH stability, water retention, dimensional stability, film-forming, enzyme resistance, dispersibility and thermal gelation.
 

Preparation of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose



1. Treat the refined cotton cellulose with alkali solution at 35-40ºC for half an hour, squeeze, crush the cellulose, and age it appropriately at 35ºC so that the average polymerization degree of the obtained alkali fiber is within the required range. Put the alkali fiber into the etherification kettle, add propylene oxide and methyl chloride in turn, etherify at 50-80ºC for 5h, and the maximum pressure is about 1.8MPa. Then add appropriate amount of hydrochloric acid and oxalic acid to the hot water at 90ºC to wash the material to expand the volume. Dehydrate with a centrifuge. Wash until neutral. When the water content in the material is less than 60%, dry it with a hot air flow at 130ºC to less than 5%. Finally, crush it through a 20-mesh sieve to obtain the finished product
